Ayurveda Esthetics

What is Ayurveda?

The literal translation of Ayurveda from Sanskrit to English is “Life Knowledge” and combines ancient science with modern skincare for a holistic approach to beauty and wellness. Your Ayurvdeic Esthetician uses this knowledge to focus on promoting good health and skincare using holistic treatments which address not just the physical body, but the balance between the mind, body, and spirit. This approach centers around preventing and healing imbalances within the body which will, in turn, help also imbalances in the skin.

Gua Sha Facial (gwa-shaw)

Gua means 'scrape' & Sha means 'red' Also known as the Ayurvedic Facelift, Gua Sha stones (i.e. jade, rose quartz, or amethyst) are used on the face, neck and shoulders and décolleté, stimulating marma points and meridians crossing the face, as well as facial fascia being released using lifting and sculpting techniques. A Gua Sha facial helps to decongest the skin and improve blood flow and by stimulating lymph and water circulation has a naturally slimming/lifting effect to the face. The firm but gentle scraping movements encourage lymph drainage to the face and neck which detoxify, helping to clear sinus congestion, prevent acne, improve fine lines and wrinkles, ease dark skin pigmentation and puffiness or dark circles under the eyes. Chi, in traditional Ayurveda medicine is energy that flows through the body, and can become blocked, causing pain, puffiness or tension in the muscles and joints of the face too. Chi must be balanced and flow freely to ensure well-being and radiance. Gua sha techniques aim to relieve stagnation and blockages and have even been known to help migraines. The effects usually last 24-48 hours

Abhyanga (abhee-yong-ga)

There is no greater expression of self-love than anointing ourselves from head to toe with warm oil—this practice is called Abhyanga. The practice of an Abhyanga massage restores balance and enhances well-being and longevity by nourishing the body and decreasing aging effects. The Sanskrit word Abhyanga translates to 'loving touch' and it is believed that the effects of Abhyanga are similar to those received when one is saturated with love. Like the experience of being loved, Abhyanga can give a deep feeling of stability and warmth. This luxurious full body oleation (herbal oil therapy) is an excellent remedy to everyday stress. Starting with a sensory journey in aromatherapy, warm oil is then accompanied by gentle, swift strokes that balance energetic centers in the body, circulate the lymphatic system, soothe the nervous system, add vigor to the dhatus (tissues) of the body and can relieve symptoms such as eczema, rosacea, psoriasis.

Garshana translates to “rubbing or polishing”, and it is this friction that highly stimulates the lymphatic system, adds firmness to the limbs and promotes exfoliation. This ancient detoxifying protocol is followed up with our blissfully soothing full body oleation to help lubricate the joints while hydrating and softening the skin. Garshana Abhyanga will leave you feeling lighter, with more energy and vitality, strengthened digestion, and boosted metabolism. Shirodhara (Shee-r-dhara)

Shirodhara comes from the two Sanskrit words “shiro” (head) and “dhara” (flow). It is a form of treatment in which warm, herbalized Ayurvedic oil is poured onto your "third eye" Chakra. Initially, the oil is streamed in patterns from the right to left temple. After several minutes, the stream is set to the middle of the forehead where it flows continuously for the duration of the treatment. The oil pour lasts approximately 30 minutes and is preceded by an Abhyangha or Garshana Abhyanga, which includes cranial activation and scalp manipulation. One of the greatest benefits of Shirodhara is it's an ideal treatment for reducing high levels of mental stress. This Ayurvedic therapy brings down the elevated serotonin levels, a neurotransmitter that stabilizes our mood, feelings of well-being, and happiness. The steady pour of warm oil encourages the Parasympathetic Nervous System to activate, that part of the nervous system which conserves energy, slows heart rate, and relaxes muscles which in turn lowers the stress hormones that can last for days after treatment. It also helps in alleviating different types of psychosomatic ailments like stress, tension, depression, anxiety. induces calmness, promotes tranquility, and facilitates relaxation. All remaining oil from your treatment is sent home for you to enjoy! THIS SERVICE MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY EITHER ABHYANGA OR GARSHANA ABHYANGA.
